Before You Kick: All You Need to Know for Your First Class

Before You Kick: All You Need to Know for Your First Class
Posted on August 20th, 2025.

Embarking on your first martial arts class feels less like joining a workout and more like stepping into an entirely new world, where discipline, movement, and history combine to create something both challenging and rewarding. The energy of a dojo or training space can be electrifying, and while the punches, kicks, and drills may seem intimidating at first, they quickly become a language of focus and growth.

Kickboxing offers not only a powerful physical outlet but also a mental exercise in resilience and adaptability. The key is to approach that first class with curiosity rather than pressure, treating each movement as a stepping stone in a process that values progress over perfection. With this mindset, excitement takes the lead over nerves, and every step forward becomes part of a journey that strengthens both body and mind.

Preparing for Your Kickboxing Class

When preparing for your first martial arts class, having the right mindset is key. As you step into this new journey, embrace a sense of openness and excitement. Martial arts, especially kickboxing combined with Filipino traditions, offers not only physical conditioning but also mental growth. You'll want to come in with realistic expectations.

Remember, no one becomes a black belt overnight. Your first class is about familiarisation with the techniques, movements, and atmosphere. Be ready to listen, learn, and perhaps make some mistakes—that's all part of the process. Do not pressure yourself to perform perfectly right out of the gate. Instead, focus on being present and absorbing as much as you can, contributing to the overall experience of kickboxing. Setting realistic expectations eases any anxiety and allows you to have more fun from the start.

Hydration cannot be understated when it comes to martial arts training. Often overlooked, staying hydrated before, during, and after your class ensures you perform at your best and aids in quicker recovery. Bring a water bottle to your first class, as you’ll likely work up a sweat while keeping engaged with the dynamic movements involved. Beginning with well-hydrated muscles helps prevent cramps and injuries as you train.

In addition, mental preparation is just as important. Clear your mind of distractions and focus on the task ahead. Many people find that practising some deep, steady breathing before starting can help centre them and increase focus. While physical preparedness is significant, mental clarity can often make the difference in your performance. Being mentally present not only enhances your training but also keeps you motivated and eager to learn the complexities of martial arts.

Regarding the practicalities, ensuring any necessary paperwork is completed before the class is a step you shouldn’t overlook. At the start of many martial arts centres, including those at Risca and Caldicot, you'll typically need to complete a waiver. This might include basic information such as emergency contacts and medical details to ensure your safety during classes. It's often emailed to you when you book your first session or can be filled out on arrival.

Double-check if any specific attire is recommended for your first class—it’s usually comfortable workout gear that allows freedom of movement. Being prepared with these administrative details will let you focus solely on your training experience. Engaging with the process, right from the beginning, makes the transition to this new discipline smoother.

What to Wear and Bring

Kickboxing is a physically demanding activity, and the right attire can significantly enhance your training experience. Opt for breathable, flexible clothing that allows you the freedom to perform a wide range of movements. Think of moisture-wicking fabrics that keep sweat at bay, helping to maintain a comfortable body temperature and prevent any skin irritation.

You might choose items like performance leggings or shorts and lightweight tops. This kind of attire ensures that nothing is restricting your high kicks or fast punches. Consider your footwear; many kickboxing classes are held barefoot on mats to enhance grip and balance, but if shoes are allowed, opt for lightweight trainers. They should give you the support needed without being bulky or tight. Proper footwear minimises the risk of slipping and other foot injuries, thus providing stability and protection during your session.

Before stepping into the practice area, check with your instructor beforehand on footwear policies. Beyond clothing, there are a couple of gear essentials you might need for your first class. Typically, gloves or hand wraps are recommended for protecting your wrists and hands, especially since your hands will be making frequent contact with pads or bags.

Initially, while you may not need to invest in personal equipment, here’s a handy list of what to consider for the future:

  • Hand Wraps: Provide wrist support and protect your knuckles.
  • Boxing Gloves: Essential for bag work and sparring.
  • Mouthguard: Often necessary if you participate in sparring, to protect your teeth and jaw.
  • Shin Guards: Useful for protecting your shins during sparring.
  • Water Bottle: Keeping hydrated is crucial, so ensure you have an easily accessible water source during intense sessions.
  • Towel: Having a small towel at hand helps keep sweat off your face and ensures your comfort throughout the class.

Once your outfit and gear are sorted, focus on the extras that make your experience more comfortable, especially if this is your first exploration into martial arts. Kickboxing is an invigorating journey, yet it can be intimidating initially. It’s advantageous to bring a travel-friendly deodorant to freshen up after class and a snack to refuel, particularly something with a mix of proteins and carbohydrates that can help you recover energy post-training.

Consider a change of clothes if you’re heading somewhere after class, as it’s tempting to linger and reflect on what you’ve learnt or chat with newly made friends. If you've got long hair, tying it back is advisable, keeping it out of your face as you move vigorously. Keeping personal toiletries on hand lets you quickly freshen up, ensuring a smooth transition out of the class setting.

Your First Kickboxing Experience

Your initial experience in the class is systematically structured to guarantee a holistic workout while introducing you to the key elements of kickboxing training. Begin with a warm-up designed to prepare your body and mind for the training ahead.

Typically, this will include a combination of light cardio like skipping or jogging in place to get your heart rate up, followed by some agility drills and dynamic stretches specific to kickboxing. These not only serve to loosen your muscles but also condition your body to the fundamental movement patterns. Emphasis on flexibility and agility here is important for executing effective strikes and combinations later on.

Transitioning into the main phase of the class, the focus shifts towards learning and refining fundamental techniques. Basic kickboxing moves such as the jab, cross, hook, and roundhouse kick are introduced. Initial drills often concentrate on perfecting form and stance, which are vital for balance and power generation. Engaging in partner work with pads might be part of this phase to practise control and precision in a supportive environment. You’ll gradually work on punch and kick combinations, which challenge your coordination and timing.

As you dive deeper, kickboxing conditioning moves come into play to build strength and stamina. These exercises integrate bodyweight movements like push-ups, squats, or sit-ups, combined with kickboxing techniques for a robust cardiovascular challenge. Each sequence aims to improve overall fitness and enhance your ability to sustain longer, more intense rounds of activity.

Dedicated energy management becomes fundamental here: adopt breathing techniques such as exhaling with punches or kicks and practising controlled breathing during rest intervals. These methods help conserve energy and maintain focus throughout the session. Inevitably, with the mental and physical exertion involved, stress management techniques become your ally.

Implementing mental cues can boost performance and enjoyment of the session, like visualising successful moves before executing them. Towards the conclusion of your class, the cool-down phase ensures that your body transitions safely from vigorous activity to rest. Often, this includes static stretching, focusing on relieving tension in the muscles predominantly used, such as the calves, hamstrings, quads, and shoulders. Not only does this decrease the risk of post-exercise stiffness, but it also promotes relaxation by lowering your heart rate.
